Why Celebrate First-Gen College Students?

First-generation college students are trailblazers. They are change-makers. They are fearless.

First-gen students are forging new paths for themselves and their families. They are navigating the often complex world of higher education with determination, all in the pursuit of becoming strong professionals and engaged leaders in their communities.

During First-Gen Week, we honor it all—the countless questions asked, the mentors who light the way, the families who sacrifice, and all the steps in between that leads first-gen students toward confidence and success.

Why Celebrate on November 8?

First-Gen College Celebration (FGCC) is celebrated annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act ("HEA") of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students' educations and made key investments in colleges and universities.
