Education Benefits Certification Process

Legacy Dependent Using the Hazlewood Act

First, you should attain legible copies of the following documents:

Veteran's DD-214 (Member 4)
Copy/Screenshot of Hazlewood hours used by both you and the veteran (even if no Hazlewood hours have been used). Both you and the veteran must register at Hazlewood online
Proof of Dependence. (Birth Certificate, or veteran's most recent IRS Tax Transcript listing you as a dependent. If you are not the veteran's biological child, then adoption certificate, or veteran's IRS Tax Return Receipt, or your birth certificate plus veteran's marriage certificate is acceptable).
Provide proof of veteran's Texas resident. (A copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and Texas address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable). If the veteran is deceased, please provide a copy of the veteran's death certificate.
If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill® months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard this step.

Then, upload those documents, and complete your Hazlewood Application.

Proof the veteran is a Texas resident (driver's license, state identification card, voter registration card, or a utility bill). If the veteran is deceased, please provide a copy of the veteran's death certificate.
If you are using any GI Bill benefit, submit proof of remaining entitlement.

Then, upload those documents, and complete your Hazlewood Application.
