Community Outreach
In the military, we all recognize that we were only as strong as the community and support we have around us. Our team helps student veterans and their families get involved with organizations that support our thriving veteran community. Contact us to get started.
Student Veteran Association
This registered student organization promotes and represents the interests of student veterans on campus. Beyond a social organization, the Student Veteran Association works to help veterans and their families reintegrate into the civilian world and adjust to life on campus. Please email the SVA at sva@austin.utexas.edu to get involved.
Veteran Advisory Council
This collective of administrators, faculty, staff, and students promotes student veteran success, for not only the student veteran community, but also the University as a whole. To execute this mission, the Veteran Advisory Council employs three working groups:
- Education and Outreach- Educating through one on one conversations, panel discussions, presentations, and multimedia to develop understanding between veterans and the greater university community.
- Policy Advocacy- Identifying and addressing barriers to student veteran recruitment, retention and success.
- Leadership Integration and Development- providing opportunities for student veterans to continue to serve the University, the community, and the nation.
Officers are elected on a yearly basis. Student veteran positions are competitive and selected on a yearly basis.
Women Veterans Group
The Women Veterans Group is a team that meets throughout the school year to provide mentoring support, networking opportunities, and on and off campus special events for female student veterans. It is faculty-led, and supported by staff, and outside agencies.
Mentor Program
Current student veterans can volunteer to be become mentors to new incoming student veterans. Each mentor is assigned several new students and supports them throughout the semester by being a familiar friendly face, and helping the incoming student transition to their new home.
Veteran Orientation
In partnership with New Student Services, our office provides a veteran-specific orientation for incoming student veterans. The orientation covers class registration, what to expect on the Forty Acres, connection to community resources, common pit-falls students experience, and one-on-one benefits certification assistance.
