A Message from President Powers

Photo of U.T. President William Powers The University of Texas at Austin is extremely proud to have veterans and active members of the military within our student body, as well as dependents of those who have served our nation. These students enhance the life of our campus community through their exceptional maturity, discipline, and skills, forged and then honed by their military training and experiences. As most of you know, no military in history has demanded as much technical training and skill-from either its officers or its enlisted men and women-as today's United States armed forces. Our veterans and military personnel are very impressive folks, and our University is better because they are here.

Please take some time to look over this Web site to learn about the many services offered to those who have served our country, and to their dependents. As you know, there is a wide array of unique needs that veterans and military personnel can have. These can run the gamut-from financing an education and transferring credits, to coping with injuries and emotional or other health-related issues. Our University has made a concerted effort to address these needs and provide as smooth a path as possible toward a soldier's goal of achieving a world-class higher education.

As a veteran myself, I know how important these veteran services can be as one transitions from the military to a collegiate environment. I am deeply appreciative of your service to our country, and proud that you have chosen to pursue an education here on the Forty Acres. The words "Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis" adorn the seal of The University of Texas at Austin. It is true that freedom and democracy are protected by the cultivated mind. It is no less true that these ideals are protected by a strong and effective military-and the brave men and women who do its work.
