The Story Behind the Scholarship
Andrew started college right after high school but decided it wasn't the right fit at the time. He opted to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. His time in the USMC was some of the best years of his life. After reconnecting with his local Marine brothers, he often enjoyed hanging out at The American Legion in Round Rock, smoking cigars, and reliving the memories.
Because of his military service he was able to use the GI Bill to go back to college. He enrolled at The University of Texas in his thirties. The fact that he came back when he was older, he appreciated the experience more and worked hard. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree while working full-time, supporting his family. Andrew's service also allowed his son Justin to complete his college degree by transferring his remaining Hazlewood Act hours to Justin.
Andrew was a diehard Longhorn fan and Texas Exes Life Member. He and his wife would often go to the Alumni Center on game days.
He loved being on campus, so much so, that he gladly accepted the position of General Manager of the Campus Computer Store. Andrew never knew a stranger. He personally loved helping students and faculty alike with their computer purchases, on top of the daily store management. He was known to deliver on and off campus when necessary to make it more convenient for his customers.
Andrew was diagnosed in March of 2022 with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer. He passed away in September 2023 after fighting this terrible disease for 18 months.
Please stop calling this a journey, as journeys ultimately end. For those that have to name things I ask respectfully that you call it a mission. Missions have purpose and never leave the fallen behind. My resolve is to complete my mission with dignity.
- Andrew Huoni, February 2023.
This endowment was created by Andrew's wife Tammy, son Justin, and the Campus Computer Store on behalf of his family and friends to be the ultimate completion of Andrew's mission with dignity and in service to others.
