Education Benefits Certification Process

After meeting with an academic advisor and registering for classes in a degree-seeking program, it's time to get certified for your educational benefits.

Please click the category below that best describes you:

I am a veteran using VA benefits

New veteran using federal education benefits

  • Application for VA benefits or the confirmation page that it has been submitted.
    • Chapters 30, 33, 1606, 1607 use VA Form 22-1990
    • Chapter 35 use VA Form 22-5490
    • Chapter 31 Eligibility / Application is determined by VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office
  • DD 214 member 4, or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • Military transcripts
  • Certificate of Eligibility from the VA (if not available, a copy of VONAPP or confirmation page)
  • Complete your ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE
  • Upload your Certificate of Eligibility from the VA (if not available, a copy of VONAPP or confirmation page) onto your GI Bill Document Uploads
  • Confirm your attendance from your tuition bill by deadline date.

Continuing veteran using federal education benefits

Send all paperwork to gibill@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

I am a dependent using VA benefits

New Undergraduate Dependent

VA Form 22-1990E for family member using transferred Post 9/11 benefits
Chapter 35 use VA Form 22-5490
VA Form 22-5495 If you are a dependent of a veteran who has never claimed benefits under DEA or the Fry Scholarship
Chapter 31 Eligibility/Application is determined by
VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office

New Graduate Dependent

Chapters 30, 33, 1606, 1607 use VA Form 22-1990
Chapter 35 use VA Form 22-5490

  • Complete your ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE
  • Upload your Certificate of Eligibility from the VA (if not available, a copy of VONAPP or confirmation page) onto your GI Bill Document Uploads
  • Confirm your attendance from your tuition bill by deadline date.
  • For graduate students: degree plan or letter from graduate adviser. MBA students usually do not need to provide degree plan or letter.

Continuing Student

Send all paperwork to gibill@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

I am a veteran using the Hazlewood Act

New Veteran Hazlewood User

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • If you served on or after 9/10/2001, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill or Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits (Ch 31) from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you are using Montgomery GI Bill-Active duty (Chapter 30), or REAP (Chapter 1607) submit proof of remaining entitlement.
  • Provide proof to show that you live in Texas (a copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable).
  • DD 214 member 4
  • Register at Hazlewood online print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours exempted.
  • Hazlewood Statement of Understanding (PDF)

Continuing Veteran Hazlewood User

  • Complete TVC-ED-2 Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application For Continued Enrollment, June 2016. (PDF)
  • If you served on or after 9/10/2001, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill or Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits (Ch 31) from the Department of Veterans Affairs. New Dependent Hazlewood User

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • Provide proof to show that the veteran lives in Texas (a copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable).
  • If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard.
  • Provide proof of service of veteran: DD 214 member 4
  • You and the veteran must register at Hazlewood online and print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours exempted.
  • Provide a copy of your birth certificate, or recent IRS transcript to show proof of your relation to the veteran.

Continuing Dependent Hazlewood User

  • Complete TVC-ED-2 Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application For Continued Enrollment, June 2016. (PDF)
  • Provide proof to show that the veteran lives in Texas (a copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable).
  • If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard. (Note: if you have completely exhausted your benefits and provided proof in the previous semester, you do not need to do this again.)

I am a dependent of a deceased or 100% disabled veteran using the Hazlewood Act

New dependent Hazlewood user of 100% disabled or deceased veteran

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard.
  • Provide proof of service of veteran: DD-214 member 4, or DD-1300 if service member died prior to discharge.
  • Provide proof of veteran's disability/ un-employability or death due to service related injuries (letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs).
  • Register at Hazlewood online and print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours exempted.
  • Provide a copy of your (child) birth certificate, or show other proof of your relationship to the veteran. Spouses must provide a copy of their marriage certificate to show relationship to veteran.

Continuing dependent Hazlewood user of 100% disabled or deceased veteran
