Education Benefits Certification Process

After meeting with an academic advisor and registering for classes in a degree-seeking program, it's time to get certified for your educational benefits. Please click the category below that best describes you:

I am a Veteran or Servicemember using VA benefits

New veteran or servicemember using federal education benefits

First, apply for your specific benefit:

  • Application for VA benefits (vets.gov)
    • *Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation) eligibility/application is determined by VA Vocational Rehabilitation Office

Then, after you submit your application, the VA will mail you your Certificate of Eligibility (or Award Letter) to your home of record. That letter should arrive about one month after you have applied. Then, after you register for classes here, complete your ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE and upload in the document upload section:

  • Your Certificate of Eligibility (or Award Letter) from the VA. (If not available, a copy of your eBenefits Award Page (for Post 9/11 GI Bill® users only), or the confirmation page from the online VA application page that it has been submitted)
  • DD 214 member 4, or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • Military transcripts (Air Force members and veterans click here)
  • Graduate School Students: Letter from your academic advisor certifying that all of your classes count toward your degree (MBA and Law Students do not need this letter).

Your VA veteran's educational benefits should take about four weeks to come in. Contact Student Veteran Services at 512-232-2835 if your benefits have not been applied to your tuition bill by the week that your tuition is due.

Continuing student

  • Complete your ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE
  • Upload your most recent Certificate of Eligibility (or Award Letter) from the VA in the document upload section of the Online Questionnaire.
  • Confirm your attendance in your tuition bill by deadline date.

I am a dependent using VA benefits

New dependent using federal education benefits

First, apply for your specific benefit:

Then, after you submit your application, the VA will mail you your Certificate of Eligibility (or Award Letter) to your home of record. I am a veteran using the Hazlewood Act

New Veteran Hazlewood User

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • Hazlewood Statement of Understanding (PDF)
  • If you served on or after 9/10/2001, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill® or Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits (Ch 31) from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you are using Montgomery GI Bill® Active duty, or any Reserve GI Bill® submit proof of remaining entitlement.
  • Provide proof to show that you live in Texas (a copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable).
  • DD 214 member 4 (Member 4 copy)
  • Register at Hazlewood online print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours used (even if never used before).

Submit this paperwork after you have registered for classes by email to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

Continuing Student

Send all paperwork to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

I am a Legacy dependent using the Hazlewood Act

New Legacy Dependent Hazlewood User

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • Hazlewood Statement of Understanding (PDF)
  • DD 214 member 4 (Member 4 copy)
  • Both the veteran and dependent must register at Hazlewood online and each must print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours exempted (even if no Hazlewood hours have been used).
  • Proof of Dependence. (Birth Certificate, or veteran's most recent IRS Tax Return Receipt listing the student as a dependent, if biological child. If not biological child, then adoption certificate, or IRS Tax Return Receipt, or dependent's birth certificate plus veteran's marriage certificate is acceptable).
  • Provide proof of veteran's Texas resident. (A copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and Texas address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable). If the veteran is deceased, please provide a copy of the veteran's death certificate.
  • If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill® months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill® from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard this step.

Submit this paperwork after you have registered for classes by email to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

Continuing student

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application For Continued Enrollment TVC-ED-2 (PDF)
  • Provide proof to show that the veteran still lives in Texas (a copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable). If the veteran is deceased, no proof of residence is required.
  • If you are using any GI Bill® benefit, submit proof of remaining entitlement.

Send all paperwork to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

I am a dependent of a deceased or 100% disabled veteran using the Hazlewood Act

New Dependent of a Deceased or 100% Disabled Veteran Hazlewood User

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application TVC-ED-1 (PDF)
  • Hazlewood Statement of Understanding (PDF)
  • Veteran's DD 214 (Member 4 copy), or DD-1300 if service member died prior to discharge.
  • Student must register at Hazlewood online and print proof of number of Hazlewood tuition hours exempted (even if no Hazlewood hours have been used).
  • Proof of Dependence. (Birth Certificate, or veteran's most recent IRS Tax Return Receipt listing the student as a dependent, if biological child. If not biological child, then adoption certificate, or IRS Tax Return Receipt, or dependent's birth certificate plus veteran's marriage certificate is acceptable).
  • Provide proof of veteran's disability / un-employability / or death due to service related injuries (letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs).
  • If the veteran served after 9/10/2001 and transferred unused Post 9/11 GI Bill® months to you, provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill® from the Department of Veterans Affairs. If not, disregard this step.

Submit this paperwork after you have registered for classes by email to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.

Continuing student

  • Complete Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application For Continued Enrollment TVC-ED-2 (PDF)
  • Provide proof of veteran's Texas residence. (A copy of the most recent utility bill with the veteran's name and address is preferred; a valid driver's license is acceptable). If the veteran is deceased, no proof of residence is required.
  • If you are using any additional federal veteran's educational benefit, submit proof of remaining entitlement.

Send all paperwork to hazlewood@austin.utexas.edu and include your UT EID and semester applied for on the subject line of the email.
