Program Overview

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate students at The University of Texas at Austin with an opportunity to develop the skillset necessary to transition from college to the workforce. The program dates are May 31, 2021 – August 6, 2021. For this summer, we anticipate the majority of positions will be virtual experiences.

Application Process

Candidates must submit a resume and cover letter through HireUTexas powered by Handshake. We encourage candidates to apply to any and all of the positions which interest them. Interviews will take place by the direct supervisors of each position after the application deadline of February 14th. Competitive Compensation

Interns are hired to work 19 hours a week for 10 weeks during the summer. Positions pay $15/hour and depending on need can qualify for housing assistance. Additional documentation is required for housing assistance, you must have been selected to participate in the internship program to qualify.

Internships include a variety of skills and subjects designed to prepare interns for success after graduation.


Each intern will be challenged to complete a project-based internship designed to improve the UT campus.

Professional Development curriculum

Interns are expected to engage in 10 weeks of shared learning with a cohort of peers.

Direct Service intern Center for Community Engagement This position will support all aspects of the Center for Community Engagement's (CCE) direct service programs, but will primarily focus on our online platform, GivePulse. GivePulse is a system available to the entire campus community, allowing users to register for volunteer opportunities, to track service hours, to track hours for their organizations, and to be part of service-learning courses. The main project will be to serve as the primary contact and support for local agencies seeking volunteers through UT, work on data collection and reports looking at usage of the platform, support outreach and training efforts across campus through digital resources and in-person/virtual training sessions. All CCE interns serve on a committee, typically planning events like our annual volunteer fair, Tower Awards, or any of our days of service.
Program Coordinator Intern Center for Students in Recovery The intern will assist the center staff with reviewing and optimizing the Recovery Ally Training program, including developing new training materials and planning effective campus outreach.
This intern will assist in the creation and revision of program materials. The intern will articulate the relationship between the program goals and evaluation data. They will assess qualitative and quantitative data included in program evaluations and issue recommendations on ways to improve the program or program materials. The student will work on collecting, organizing, and compiling reports from data available in Qualtrics. In this position the intern will also assist in writing reports or articles related to the program outcomes.
Administrative Office Intern Counseling and Mental Health Center The intern will be a team member in the administrative office that manages day-to-day operations at the Counseling & Mental Health Center. The intern will have a unique opportunity to work as an Administrative Office Team member on special projects this summer. They will contribute and utilize their knowledge of and experience with current online technologies and virtual platforms to inform and streamline transition of our processes to virtual systems. The intern will redesign and revamp administrative-support functions into virtually-interactive systems, including inventory, clinical staff lending library, CMHC forms and other processes.
Summer Programming Intern Gender & Sexuality Center The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is looking for summer interns, and one of them could be you! Our summer interns primarily work with our summer orientation sessions, which includes tabling, talking with students, assisting with the orientation sessions themselves, and other special projects. Our interns also work on book and movie reviews, research about possible speakers to come to campus, help with our social media and with the GSC's Ana Sisnett Library. Students are encouraged to take and share leadership roles, recognize hidden talents, think critically, challenge assumptions, develop their individual identities and goals, initiate new activities, and define their own experiences.
Wellness Intern Longhorn Wellness Center The position will provide support for general Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) outreach programming, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of physical health and nutrition related programs and interventions. The intern will complete research into relevant health and wellness topics and assist with developing innovative ways to deliver our programming virtually. The intern will develop and/or edit material and updates for website and/or other communication channels.
Communications Intern Longhorn Wellness Center The intern will review and create web content for the Longhorn Wellness website. They will assist with health communication material development and create promotion content. The intern will assist with social media analytics and propose news ideas to promote the Longhorn Wellness programs and services. The intern may have potential work on other communication projects as need arises. 
Creative Design Intern UHS and CMHC - Public Information Team The intern will work on project-based activities from concept creation to final product for real-world needs and use. They will use Adobe Creative Cloud as the software to support their projects. 
Programming Intern New Student Services This intern will help in the creation and implementation of Longhorn Welcome Signature Events. This student would help review information from previous years, brainstorm events, assist with the marketing/social media of Longhorn Welcome, detail the logistics, and potentially even direct volunteers during the event. This is a unique possibility to be part of a large-university program.
Multimedia Intern Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life The multimedia intern will develop modules for that explain the Sorority and Fraternity Life's programs, policies and services. The intern will curate, compose and publish content for use within social media, website, and newsletters. The student will have the opportunity to research best practices of the utilization of technology in other SLF communities from different higher education institutions. The internship will provide an experience for the student to produce original content as a resource for SFL and collaborate with supervisor for idea development, updates and troubleshooting.
Health Promotions Intern SHIFT This internship will assist SHIFT staff in moving our pilot initiatives forward. Projects may include helping the SHIFT team roll out a technology platform to help inform student conversation around substance use; develop and create communications to further SHIFT's message via messaging campaigns and/or social media platforms; or assisting in peer-peer workshop development. The student will draw from various data to create informed messaging and bring their unique voice to inform student-centered communications and projects.
Administrative Intern Student Conduct & Academic Integrity The intern will work with the Student Conduct Case Manager to run reports on outstanding cases and sanctions. They will interpret, evaluate, and summarize "Closed Case" survey data. Intern will develop educational training material for student Peer Ambassadors (PA), Student Conduct Advisory Committee (SCAC), and Student Conduct Board Members. The intern will have the opportunity to work with other portfolios within Student Conduct and Academic Integrity to complete identified administrative projects as well.
Communications Intern Student Veteran Services The intern will assist the Student Veteran Services (SVS) staff with internal communications. They will assist the SVS staff with developing professional development curriculum in areas such as personal branding, social media presence, elevator pitches, and networking skills (as related to communication). The student may have potential meetings with veterans to better understand them and their needs.
Staff Training Intern– 2 positions Texas Unions Transition HR The intern will work on the coordination of training for new employees for Texas Unions and UHD. They will assist in administrative duties as requested including Reference and Verifications of Employment
Human Resources Intern UHS & CMHC – Human Resources The Human Resources Intern will audit and update position descriptions to reflect current duties in the new system. They will expand/improve our new hire tracking checklist/mechanism that enables human resources personnel to follow up with new employees at one-week mark, one-month mark, and 6-month mark. Collaborate with other human resources representatives within the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs to coordinate a strategy for managing specific human resources processes. The intern will participate in internship program activities and complete required components, including three self-assessments, a reflection essay, and a program evaluation. The intern will have other duties as assigned.
Social Media & Outreach Strategist Intern UHS & CMHC – Public Information The position will focus on researching and curating content for the Healthyhorns social media account and developing the Fall 2021 social media strategy. The intern will evaluate the effectiveness of content across platforms contributing to outreach and engagement strategies for new UT students and provide student feedback for web redesign.
Infection Prevention and Research Intern – 2 positions University Health Services – Administration The intern will review standardized practices for infection prevention and safety in the healthcare setting. The student will assess environmental cleaning practices in the healthcare setting and develop quality improvement initiatives. The intern will assist in developing a written pandemic plan for the healthcare setting.
Sustainability Outreach Intern University Housing and Dining This position will assist in the development and operations of sustainability programs and outreach throughout New Student Orientation. This includes organizing educational opportunities through passive (signage, flyers, etc.) and active (tabling, events, etc.) efforts. Although this internship will assist in addressing all areas of sustainability, there will be a particular focus on proper waste sorting and waste diversion. The intern will develop program outcomes and goals, assemble programming materials, and serve as spokesperson for campus' sustainability efforts and opportunities. The student will develop signage, written materials and optionally work in the gardens. Participation is required for all Division of Student Affairs Internship Program cohort activities and assessments.
Residence Life Internship - Mooov-In University Housing and Dining The Mooov-In intern will work closely with the Chair and Assistant Director overseeing the Mooov-In operation. They will inform and provide insight into strategies to create a more engaging and efficient move-in process for new residential students. Interns will have the unique opportunity to serve as a team member on special projects during the summer.
Residence Life Internship – Student Staff Training University Housing and Dining The Student Staff Training intern will be a team member on the committee that designs and shapes centralized resident assistant training. The intern will attend all Student Staff Training and Development Committee meetings. They will inform and provide insight into curriculum and structure of the training. They will specifically work with organizing Canvas, assisting with assessment, and creating reports.
Purchasing Intern University Housing and Dining The intern will conduct research and collect data related to UHD Dining. The intern will be part of the Specific Menu of Change principles to move the department toward their sustainability goals. The intern will take a role in the project's goal of obtaining sustainable and local products following the Menus of Change Principal
Food Management Systems Intern University Housing and Dining The intern will take an active role in the UHD inventory process and analysis. In addition, they will work with the Food Management System, Food Pro, with recipe input and corrections. The intern will be assigned other administrative duties as requested.
Human Resources Intern University Housing and Dining – Human Resources The UHD Human Resources Intern will be provided an opportunity to work alongside HR professionals and learn about the recruitment processes. The intern will gain understanding of the full recruitment life cycle including; reviewing job descriptions, posting requisitions, reviewing hiring materials, and assisting with pre-onboarding steps.
Student Engagement Intern – 2 positions University Housing and Dining – Texas Unions Transition Team The intern will work on the development, execution and analysis of the Student Interest Survey - Texas Unions Retail Offerings. They will coordinate meetings with students and leadership representatives. Other administrative duties as requested.
Student Programs Intern University Unions Our internship's main task would be assisting with Campus Events + Entertainment (E+E) and summer programming initiatives. The main sections of this project are typically 1) planning and executing E+E and summer orientation programs, and 2) helping plan E+E and welcome week events. Specifically, the intern will brainstorm orientation activities, reach out to vendors, help write and oversee the University contracting process for vendor, and act as day-of contact for vendors. The student will manage event budgets for orientation programs and welcome week event(s) and help manage E+E events. The intern will collaborate with campus partners to plan welcome week event(s) and work alongside summer student employees to support summer programs and office operation.
Esports intern University Unions The Esports intern will assist with design and layout of Esports space. They will help in equipment acquisition, identify possible corporate sponsors and compile/compare information of other schools. The intern will participate in all required Division of Student Affairs Internship Program cohort activities and assessments. The student will participate, when schedule allows, in University Unions meetings.
Sustainability Intern University Unions The sustainability internship focuses on providing support for sustainability activities in the University Unions (UU) facilities including project coordination, research and presentations. The intern will research and/or support sustainability opportunities or projects - particularly with the University Unions Food Truck program and its Zero Waste catering events. The intern will benchmark the department against other union organizations across the country. They will determine feasibility of a "Green Team" to support logistics and diversion during catering events and food courts in peak periods. The student will create and manage databases containing sustainability-related information.

The intern will develop a communications plan in coordination with the social media staff member to enhance and improve signage related to sustainability efforts in UU facilities. The intern will review and update the department website to include sustainability information. Participation is required for all Division of Student Affairs Internship Program cohort activities and assessments. The intern will have the opportunity to work in partnership with other departments and colleagues across campus.
Work/Life Balance Intern University Unions This internship is designed to appeal to a candidate considering Human Resources as a career and will provide an entry level opportunity to explore the dimensions of this career path. The second goal of the internship will be to assist and support our diverse team members in inclusive programs and initiatives that promote balance between University Unions staff personal and work lives. This role will provide tools, information and opportunities to our employees to ensure they have differing levels of outlets to manage stress and have time during the day to reflect.  The intern selected will help to identify, support and facilitate opportunities and initiatives to support our teams in ways that focus on mental happiness, physical health and focused productivity in their daily roles and to support their personal lifestyles.
Development Intern – 2 positions Vice President for Student Affairs The intern will complete the VIP (UT's donor database) training. The student will create and support the development of events. They will work with departmental stakeholders to ensure best practices and manage stewardships practice. The intern will create project plans, budget analyses, and reports.
Hazing Prevention and Education Internship Wellness Network Hazing Prevention and Education Committee The intern will have a unique opportunity to support the Hazing Prevention and Education Committee in a number of projects over the course of the summer. Projects include planning all events and promotions for National Hazing Prevention Week (September 2021) and additional projects as determined by the intern and supervisor.  The intern will attend all committee and sub-committee meetings. 
UT Outpost Intern - Food Pantry and Career Closet Operations - 2 positions Student Emergency Services in the Office of the Dean of Students The intern will help oversee the operations of the UT Outpost as it addresses food insecurity and supports students impacted by financial hardships. They will primarily focus on both the food pantry's and career closet's day-to-day operations.
Media and Design Intern Student Activities, Office of the Dean of Students The intern will produce training videos reviewing processes and online systems that student organization leaders utilize, including the room reservation system and HornsLink. They will also be tasked with creating informational graphics explaining policies and procedures related to student organizations. Additionally, they will generate content to be distributed to student organization leaders and posted on the Student Activities website.
Research Intern – 2 positions Deans Research Institute This intern will participate in assessment and research projects, as well as conducting literature reviews. They will engage in data collection, data input, transcription, and coding while also maintaining and organizing any files they are assigned. This intern will assist in writing reports and preparing professional presentations. while also attending all required meetings and trainings.
Body Positivity Intern Longhorn Wellness Center The intern will work with the Mental Health Promotion Coordinator at the Longhorn Wellness Center to create body positivity/health at every size/body image public health programming on The University of Texas at Austin's campus. The intern will research programming on other campuses, provide a literature review on relevant research, create recommendations for programs/initiatives, and help to create a marketing plan for implementing programs on campus.
BeVocal Marketing Intern Longhorn Wellness Center The BeVocal Marketing Intern will develop social media campaigns with messages and web content to promote BeVocal. The intern will develop and edit material and updates for the website or other communication channels. The intern will create outreach materials as needed, such as infographics. They will also strategize with professional and student staff to improve engagement with BeVocal programming.
Graphic Design Intern Office of the Dean of Students Assist the Director of Strategic and Executive Communications and Marketing Coordinator with digital and print design for web, social, print collateral and promotional items for the Office of the Dean of Students and all the units within. Work in a fast-paced and changing environment and manage a variety of assignments while gaining valuable experience and creating work to add to your portfolio.
Social Media Strategy Intern Office of the Dean of Students Assist the Director of Strategic and Executive Communications and Marketing Coordinator with social media planning, compilation and strategy for the Office of the Dean of Students and all the units within. Students work in a fast-paced and changing environment to review research into Office social accounts, past posts and marketing plan for the upcoming year to categorize, identify and create content to calendar and prepare the 2021-2022 academic year.
Community Impact Intern Center for Community Engagement This position will support telling the story of John S Chase, the first black graduate of the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, who designed the new off-campus location of the Center for Community Engagement. Depending on experience and interest, this intern would create a virtual tour of the neighborhood in East Austin, collect and write about the history of the building itself, assist with the fundraising campaign to finish renovations on the building, build up content for the website and social media, write feature stories on a topic related to the building or John S Chase, and assist with planning fall welcome events. All CCE interns serve on a committee, typically planning events like our annual volunteer fair, Tower Awards, or any of our days of service.
