Division of Student Affairs Internship Program

Applications for the summer 2020 program are closed. Please check back in November to apply for the summer 2021 program.

Interns are hired to work 19 hours a week for 10 weeks during the summer. Positions pay $13/hour in addition to on and off-campus housing assistance.

Internships include a variety of skills and subjects designed to prepare interns for success after graduation. To prepare interns for success, each internship has identified three of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies students will develop through the experience. As a part of the program, interns will submit a series of assessments reflecting on their development in those competencies.

Residence Life Intern - Student Staff Selection (University Housing and Dining)

Graphic Design Intern (Center for Students in Recovery)

Graphic design work is an essential component of how we tell the story of the Center for Students in Recovery (CSR) and the students that make up our community. Being able to communicate who we are, what we do, why we matter, in a visual way that is also in alignment with the Division of Student Affairs and UT Austin, expands our reach and helps us support our campus' students in recovery. The intern will work closely with the CSR Director and Program Coordinator to develop a full academic years' worth of digital and printed media for the sober social, service, educational, and outreach events for CSR's programming.

Creative Design Intern (University Health Services and the Counseling and Mental Health Center)

Projects include the Healthyhorns promo calendar, new student orientation deliverables, parent mailers, special event (e.g. Suicide Prevention Week) deliverables, clinic and general information deliverables; use of industry standard software to produce layouts, illustrations, and images (photography); entirely project-based from concept to final product for real-world use. Maintaining a student perspective during the creation of the Healthyhorns promotional calendar is essential for this prominent piece to be accepted by our primary audience (entering freshmen).

Body Positivity Intern (Longhorn Wellness Center)

The intern will work with the Mental Health Promotion Coordinator at the Longhorn Wellness Center to create body positivity/health at every size/body image public health programming on the University of Texas at Austin's campus. esports Intern (University Unions)

This would include space development, space design, determination of technology needs, identifying possible corporate sponsorship opportunities. This would be a big assist as we are planning to create, develop and launch esports space in the University Unions. The student intern will have an important voice and critical input into all of this as we ultimately want to meet the esports needs of the students.

Our intern's main task will be assisting with Campus Events + Entertainment (E+E)'s summer programming initiatives. The main sections of this project are 1) planning and executing E+E's late night summer orientation programs, 2) helping plan the Unions' "Beat the Heat" event that takes place during Longhorn Welcome, and 3) helping plan E+E's Back to School Bash event, which takes place the first week school is in session in the fall.

Communications Intern (SHIFT)

This position will assist in the development and operations of sustainability programs and outreach throughout New Student Orientation. This includes organizing educational opportunities through passive (signage, flyers, etc.) and active (tabling, events, etc.) efforts. Although this internship will assist in addressing all areas of sustainability, there will be a particular focus on proper waste sorting and waste diversion.

Food Pantry Operations Intern (Student Emergency Services in the Office of the Dean of Students)

The intern's main project will be to assist in oversight of the operations of the UT Outpost as it addresses food insecurity and supports students impacted by financial hardships. It will primarily focus on the campus food pantry's day-to-day operations. This includes but is not limited to: supervising volunteers, managing inventory and food safety compliance policies, coordinating with partners, supporting the program assessment and data-management, contributing to campus-programming, and working directly with students. Additionally, the position will be tasked to assist in creating events and programs for the Fall 2020 - Spring 2021 year that will aid in educational understanding of food insecurity within the UT Community.

The internship at the UT Outpost is more than just simply a "staff member". This individual will be asked to help grow and shape our program for the better. We look at our interns during the summer to help us make smart and creative changes in both or day-to-day operations and to our upcoming programming.

Program Evaluation Intern (Center for Students in Recovery)

The intern will work closely with the Center for Students in Recovery (CSR) Director and Program Coordinator to assist in the gathering, organizing, and preliminary analysis of pre- and post-test data gathered as part of the Recovery Ally Training program. CSR has developed this training to describe the science of substance use disorders and recovery, demonstrate how to have a conversation with a person who seems to be struggling with substance use, and demonstrate how to express support for a student in recovery. In addition to the functions explained above, the intern will also help incorporate feedback into training materials for the next academic year, in conjunction with the existing trainers and program supervisors.

Program assessment/evaluation is an essential component of how we tell the story of CSR and the students that make up our community. Being able to communicate who we are, what we do, why we matter, in response to population data, expands our reach and helps us support our campus' students in recovery. By doing a deep evaluation of the CSR Recovery Ally Training, CSR will be able to make adjustments and/or expand our ally program so that we are able to reach campus partners and groups in more meaningful ways, and in doing so better support individuals in recovery from substance use disorder.

Wellness Intern (Longhorn Wellness Center)

The Wellness Intern will oversee various aspects of the Sun Safety Initiative, including both outreach and assessment. Intern will work in the Longhorn Wellness Center alongside other student workers and staff on the Increasing Sun Safety Initiative. Intern will work on education, outreach, and changes to the environment around students to promote healthier sun safety behaviors. Activities include: working with campus partners to maintain the sun screen dispensers on campus, plan and create communication strategies such as social media, residence hall posters, digital screens, targeted education in high-need places like Clark Field, and targeted outreach before high-risk times like spring break and sorority formals and social events. Intern will help create an evaluation for our initiative that includes behavioral, environmental and sustainability marker points.

Summer Organization Development Intern (Student Activities)

A major goal of the Summer Organization Development Intern will be to enhance student engagement with our resources through Student Activities. This position will have the opportunity to help our office build on new successes with our Student Organization Travel program. The intern will work on researching travel policies at peer institutions, leading two focus groups with UT student constituents on travel messaging and planning, and ultimately refining and facilitating a training workshop for Student Organization travel. The intern will have an opportunity to engage in first-hand research, develop relatable and transferable skills, benchmark with peer institutions to explore best practices for student organization travel programs, including effective communication and marketing strategies and how to work with organizations facing non-compliance. The intern will bring a perspective of the student voice to our travel program, hopefully helping us to better identify ways to improve our processes and be more inclusive of how to advise our very diverse range of student organizations at UT Austin.
