History of the Graduate Student Assembly

The Graduate Student Assembly was initially connected to Graduate Studies and first registered in November of 1968 as the Council of Graduate Students (COGS).  COGS was part of Cabinet of College Councils until 1989.

Lack of input and lack of any advance warning to graduate students concerning decisions to cancel summer salary supplements led COGS to separate from the Cabinet of College Councils in order to focus solely on graduate students' interests. In August, 1994, the group took on the name Graduate Student Assembly. Top leadership positions were called Co-Chairs, which eventually changed to President and Vice President.

2007 was the first year the GSA President and Vice President positions were elected during campus-wide elections.

In 2010-2011 the Graduate Student Assembly requested joint sponsorship with the Dean of Students and Graduate Studies which included receiving support from Legislative Student Organization staff and advisors.  GSA was one of the original 2011 occupants of the new Student Activities Center, now the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activities Center.
