How to Refer a Non-Academic Violation to SJS
In addition to referring suspected academic dishonesty violations to Student Judicial Services (SJS), you may also refer suspected non-academic violations of University rules or policies (e.g., disruptive classroom behavior) to our office.
Although you are welcome to consult with SJS staff members by phone, disciplinary matters should be referred in writing and accompanied by any supporting evidence.
The disciplinary referral should contain a summary of the alleged violation(s), student identification information, names of witnesses (if any), and contact information for any witnesses and yourself.
While SJS will accept anonymous referrals, such referrals may limit the scope of our investigation of, or response to, the alleged misconduct because students have the right to know the nature and source of information that may be used in any disciplinary proceedings.
In the case of disruptive classroom behavior, you should meet with the student to discuss parameters for appropriate classroom behavior. However, if the disruptive behavior persists or poses serious problems or concerns, you may refer the matter to SJS.
Note: If a student's behavior appears to be threatening or violent, you should contact The University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) immediately. For further information, see "Addressing Difficult and Sensitive Matters."
