Program Safety Education Services

Student Activities' Program Safety Education Services (PSES) provides educational programs, resources and services to foster a student organization culture that thinks proactively about student safety and well-being during co-curricular activities and how to manage potential risks. We partner with students, authorized representatives, student leaders, registered student organization advisers, DoS staff and others to help prevent or minimize physical, psychological, financial, reputational, environmental and other potential harms associated with student organization activities.

Safety Education is a Shared Responsibility

At UT Austin, PSES uses a "Facilitator Model" that balances the rights and responsibilities of both students and the University. This model seeks to create shared responsibility for student safety. Neither the University nor students should have sole responsibility for student safety and risk management. As facilitators, our job is to define appropriate boundaries (university policy, the law, etc.) and give students the ability to make choices. In this model, the following must occur:

  • Students and student leaders must acknowledge their critical role in ensuring their own safety and the safety of fellow students; and
  • The University must also share responsibility by providing students and registered student organizations with resources and tools they can use to plan safe events and activities.

How We Can Help

The resources we provide are available to all of UT Austin's registered student organizations, sponsored student organizations, their authorized representatives and RSO advisers. Our staff is available to assist with event planning, safety training and other risk management and risk prevention education. Services include:

  • Individual and group consultations
  • Training and workshops
  • Group presentations
  • Interpretation of the university's Institutional Rules
  • Referrals to other university resources
