About Program Safety Education Services
Our goal is to help develop a student organization culture that thinks proactively about risk and how to manage it. We do not want to take away all of the fun activities on campus or create an unnecessary bureaucracy that hinders students' ability to do their activities. We want to create an intelligent application of risk management that focuses on student safety through education.
Our Risk Management Model
Here at UT, we use a "Facilitator Model" that balances the rights and responsibilities of students and the university. This model seeks to create shared responsibility for student safety - neither the university nor the students should have sole responsibility for student safety & risk management. As facilitators, our job is to define appropriate boundaries (which could be university policy, the law, etc.) and give students the ability to make choices. In this model, the following things must occur:
- Students and student leaders must acknowledge their critical role in protecting their own and other students' safety
- The university must also share responsibility by providing resources and tools to students and student organizations that they can use to plan safe events and activities.
