DoS Critical Functions

Advising / Mentoring

  • Advise the university’s legislative student organizations - Student Government, the Senate of College Councils and the Graduate Student Assembly (LSO)
  • Advise registered student organizations (Student Activities)
  • Advise Greek Councils, including the Interfraternity, Latino Pan-Hellenic, Multicultural Greek, National Pan-Hellenic, Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic and University Panhellenic Councils, as well as Affiliate Organizations (GLIE)
  • Student legal consultation (LSS)
  • Advise faculty, staff and students on matters related to student conduct violations (SJS)
  • Provide mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students through the University of Texas Leadership Institute (GLIE)
  • Provide faculty supervision for graduate study projects and select internships (DoS Central)

Community Relations

  • Through the University Area Partners organization, and in conjunction with the City of Austin and area businesses, the Office of the Dean of Students works to improve the community near campus
  • Collaboration with non-profits to offer community service and philanthropic opportunities (DoS Central)
  • Collaboration with the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission, Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, etc. (DoS Central)
  • DoS educates students on safety and civic responsibility (DoS Central)

Faculty Research Initiative

  • In partnership with the university’s colleges and schools, DoS conducts comprehensive student development research in the areas of academic success, leadership, civic responsibility and intercultural education (DoS Research Initiative)
  • OUR UT - Opportunities for Undergraduate Research at The University of Texas at Austin recruits undergraduates interested in assisting with the DoS Research Institute's project

Intercultural Education

  • The CHANGE Institute: Transforming Self and Community. Fall semester institute focusing on critical issues related to diversity, social justice and social responsibility (GLIE)
  • Intergroup Dialogue Program. Offered by DoS and the Department of Educational Psychology to students interested in learning about issues related to diversity, social justice and social responsibility (GLIE)
  • Multicultural, diversity, social justice and social responsibility programs and services for students and staff (GLIE)

Leadership Development

  • 5-month Orientation Advisor leadership development training (NSS)
  • EDP 369K Student Organization Leadership (Student Activities)
  • University of Texas Leadership and Ethics Institute graduate and undergraduate leadership development opportunities (GLIE)
  • Leadership Education and Progress program (LEAP) (GLIE)
  • EDP 369K Greek Leadership Issues: 3-hour upper division elective taught through the Department of Educational Psychology each semester. Fraternity and sorority members who take this class learn about the critical issues leaders can face within the sorority and fraternity community. (GLIE)
  • Greek Leadership Retreat: Designed to assist current and potential leaders within the sorority and fraternity community in developing and refining their leadership skills (GLIE)
  • Greek 101: Provides information that will assist new sorority and fraternity members in meeting the responsibilities of being members of the university's sorority and fraternity community (GLIE)
