Student Leadership Team

Motivated, qualified individuals who make it a priority to develop and continuously enhance their leadership skills are well suited for Student Leadership Team positions within LEI. Student Leadership Team members should demonstrate leadership abilities and a desire to leave their mark on The University of Texas at Austin.

Personal Development and Learning Outcomes

Student Leadership Team members involved with LEI in 2009-2010 identified the following eight personal development and learning outcomes achieved through their participation in LEI.

  • Establish and maintain satisfying interpersonal relationships with colleagues while continuing to develop interpersonal relationships within the organization
  • Interpret and demonstrate personal and organizational values (e.g. ethics, accountability, honesty) through activities and opportunities
  • Articulate organizational goals to guide their decisions and overcome obstacles that hamper goal achievement
  • Accurately communicate the intent of their message through speaking and writing
  • Identify one's own identity while building self-respect;
  • Comprehend the dynamics of the group through identifying personal and group skills and abilities
  • Develop a leadership philosophy that is translated through the individual and the organization
  • Identify the expectations of their leadership position within the organization through access to organizational charts and clearly stated program expectations

Leadership Position Descriptions

Student Leadership Team positions available for 2011-2012 are:

  • Administrative Director (1 position)
  • Campus and Community Outreach Committee Co-chairs (2 positions)
  • Communication Director (1 position)
  • First-Year Initiatives Committee Co-chairs (2 positions)
  • Leadership Development and Training Committee Co-chairs (2 positions)
  • Recognition and Awards Committee Co-chairs (2 positions)

READY TO APPLY ONLINE?

Please follow the six easy steps below to ensure your application is submitted completely and correctly:

  1. Review the 2011-2012 Student Leadership Team position descriptions completely.
  2. After reviewing the descriptions, you will need to be able to rank the positions in order of your preference 1 (most interested) to 6 (least interested).
  3. Think about 2 peer references and 1 faculty/staff reference who can speak to your leadership experiences and potential. You will be asked to provide their name, e-mail address, phone number and their relationship to you at the end of the application. Be sure you have contacted those references to ask for their permission to be included in your application. It may also be a good idea to provide them a copy of the position descriptions and the overview of LEI for their reference.
  4. Consider your availability for a 30-minute interview during the week of April 11-14 between 3 and 7 p.m. On the application, you will be asked to mark all available times, and a LEI staff member will confirm your finalized interview time after April 1.
  5. Prepare answers to the following application questions:
    1. Why are you interested in being involved with the University of Texas Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI)?
    2. Why is leadership important at The University of Texas at Austin?
    3. What is your personal definition of leadership?
    4. In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a leader? How have you demonstrated these qualities in your own leadership experience?
    5. What are your time commitments for the 2011-2012 academic year?
