Graduate Internship
Fall 2011 (unpaid)

SUMMARY

Purpose of the Position: To support the University of Texas Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) and the LEI Student Leadership Team members through event planning support and leadership training

DUTIES

To gain a student-centered experience, the intern must be available at particular times throughout the week. The times and programs are listed below.

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of the Leadership Education and Progress (LEAP) mentor training program on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m.; OR
  • Assist with classroom instruction for the EDP369K: Socially Responsible and Ethical Leadership for Change course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-2 p.m.; OR
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of The Leadership Series on Wednesdays from 5:30- 6:45 p.m.; OR
  • Assist with leadership development training for the LEI Student Leadership Team on Thursdays from 5-6:30 p.m.

OTHER PROJECTS

If the intern is unavailable during the above times, alternative projects are listed below.

  • Assist with the planning of a day-long retreat for the Spring 2011 Leadership Education and Progress (LEAP) participants;
  • Research leadership initiatives for second-year students at other institutions;
  • Research and create leadership training presentation modules on a variety of leadership topics, based on requests;
  • Work with LEI Staff to train LEI Student Leadership Team members on training module materials.

SUPERVISION

Received: Weekly meetings and general direction from the LEI Coordinator of Leadership Development

EDUCATION

Required: Must remain in good standing with her or his university as a Graduate student.

EXPERIENCE

Required: A combination of 4 long semesters as a student leader (including experiences as an undergraduate and/or graduate student) and planning and implementing leadership programs. Experience with and commitment to social justice issues. Demonstrated effectiveness working with diverse student populations. Professional demeanor. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred: Six long semesters of experience working as a student leader with program planning background (including experiences as an undergraduate and/or graduate student). Experience developing and implementing large-scale leadership programs.

BENEFITS

Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education will work with the graduate intern and her or his institution to assist the individual in receiving academic credit for the internship, if desired. An applicant should coordinate with her or his academic department to determine individual internship credit requirements. The graduate intern is an unpaid position. It does not provide a salary, stipend or in-state tuition voucher.
