Graduate Assistantships (GAs)

The Office of the Dean of Students (DoS) at The University of Texas at Austin is committed to helping students acquire the skills and attitudes that will further their success at the university. DoS staff mentor and advise students, help them recognize and eliminate factors that can interfere with academic and professional achievement, organize a variety of programs, workshops and developmental experiences, and develop and interpret university policies.

Positions


The higher education and student affairs graduate assistantships available in the Office of the Dean of Students provide graduate students with professional experience working with students, faculty and staff in a variety of roles.

The majority of graduate assistantships are filled by graduate students enrolled in the Department of Educational Administration in the College of Education. However, all UT Austin graduate students with the required qualifications are encouraged to apply. Positions are sometimes filled by returning graduate students.

Graduate Assistantships

Required Qualifications

Must be a currently enrolled graduate student (taking at least 9 hours). Preference will be given to Master's and Ph.D. students in the College of Education’s Higher Education Administration program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A desire to work with students
  • Ability to utilize concepts of student development in program planning, counseling, and administrative duties
  • Experience with Macintosh computer hardware and software or the ability to learn applications quickly
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Other experience/skills as relevant to specific position responsibilities

Terms of Employment

  • Nine to ten-month positions, with starting dates from mid-August to early September continuing through May
  • Half-time positions at salary of $1,100 per month
  • Hours to be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday–Friday, with some evening and prescheduled weekend hours

Positions in the Office of the Dean of Students


DoS Central Administration

One position is currently available.

Provides central administration and oversight for the Office of the Dean of Students and serves as the central clearinghouse for inquiries from students, faculty, family members, staff and alumni. Guided by the university's Institutional Rules, DoS Central implements measures of accountability to help ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of UT Austin students.

DoS Central graduate assistant responsibilities include:

  • Assist with special projects and administrative tasks for the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and the Senior Associate Dean of Students
  • Conduct research on student services, leadership and training
  • Develop strategies to promote services and resources
  • Design measuring tools to conduct and evaluate programs and new initiatives
  • Prepare internal and external reports and other written correspondence
  • Participate in staff meetings, strategic planning sessions and committees
  • Provide resources and advice to students, parents, staff and other constituents
  • Organize and plan events involving students and administration
  • Serve as teaching assistant for Examining Campus Cultures graduate seminar taught by Senior Associate Dean of Students
  • Additional administrative functions as needed

The focus of this assistantship is to provide the graduate student with generalist experience in student affairs.

Deputy to the Dean of Students

Graduate Assistant, Deputy to the Dean of Students Portfolio

DESCRIPTION

Provide administrative and professional support to the Deputy to the Dean of Students, whose portfolio includes serving as the Deputy Advisor to three of the University's Legislative Student Organizations (Graduate Student Assembly, Senate of College Councils, and Student Government) and leading special projects such as the student organization discipline process, as requested by the Dean.

New Fall 2012 Masters degree students in the Higher Education Administration program will have priority for this position. Questions about this graduate assistantship may be directed to Melinda J. Sutton.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the administration of a complex student organization discipline process to resolve alleged policy violations by student organizations.
  • Monitor information flow, status, and student organizational compliance of settlement agreements with student organizations.
  • Provide programming advice and support for Legislative Student Organization executive officers, agency directors, committee chairs, and college council leaders, as assigned.
  • Assist with assessment activities of the unit.
  • Assist with office-wide functions including rally duty and response team.
  • Perform other administrative duties, as assigned.

Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education (GLIE)

One position is currently available.

Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education (GLIE) is an area in the Office of the Dean of Students that provides educational programs and services in sorority and fraternity life, leadership development and intercultural education. Sorority and fraternity life provides programming and support to students who are members of sororities and fraternities as well as advising to the six governing sorority and fraternity councils. Intercultural education facilitates a variety of opportunities for the campus community to learn about issues related to diversity, social justice, and inclusion at The University of Texas at Austin.

Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education (GLIE) position description

  • Attend Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education as well as Office of the Dean of Students meetings, programs, activities and events when appropriate.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of area programs, activities and events.
  • Assist and support instructors with courses offered in partnership with the Department of Educational Psychology.
  • Provide support to the advisors of the Interfraternity, Latino Pan-Hellenic, Multicultural, National Pan-Hellenic, Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic and University Panhellenic Councils as well as Order of Omega.
  • Research and collect data on sorority and fraternity communities and intercultural education initiatives at peer institutions.
  • Assist with general office duties as needed.

Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI)

One position is currently available.

The Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) provides a centralized, comprehensive leadership-training program for all enrolled undergraduate and graduate students including both theoretical and practical ethical leadership development.

Sophomores Advancing in Leadership (SAIL) Program Position Description

The Graduate Assistant will primarily assist with the development and implementation of the Sophomores Advancing in Leadership (SAIL) Program within the Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) and assist with the curriculum and planning of the program in addition to supporting other LEI as well as GLIE programs and initiatives.

New Fall 2012 Masters degree students in the Higher Education Administration program will have priority for this position.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS

  • Experience working with leadership development programs as well as a program planning background (including experiences as an undergraduate and/or graduate student);
  • Experience in advising students who are planning peer-to-peer leadership programs and experiences;

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in advising the LEI Student Leadership Team.
  • Assist with the coordination of the SAIL program including advising the SAIL co-chairs who are members of the Student Leadership Team
  • Assist with the coordination of other LEI programs including, but not limited to LEAP, Leadership Series, the Texas Leadership Summit and intercultural education presentations, and various recognition events.
  • Assist and support the instructor team for the Ethics and Leadership course offered by GLIE in partnership with the Department of Educational Psychology.
  • Assist and support GLIE programs such as The CHANGE Institute, Greek Awards, and the Intergroup Dialogue courses, and other events when appropriate.
  • Attend Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education as well as Office of the Dean of Students meetings, programs, activities and events when appropriate.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating area outreach efforts to provide resources and training to the campus community.
  • Research other Sorority and Fraternity life, Leadership Development, and Intercultural Education programs and initiatives at peer institutions.
  • Assist with general office duties as assigned (i.e. front area reception, area operations assistance, etc.).

New Student Services (NSS)

No positions are currently available.

Administers programs for undergraduate students during their first year on campus, including pre-semester and summer orientation sessions, Start Fresh events at the beginning of the fall semester, and the ENCORE program for nontraditionally-aged students.

New Student Services (NSS) has two Graduate student positions during most academic years. The positions begin in September and continue through June to accommodate the new student orientation schedule. The two positions share responsibilities in the NSS area. Specific projects may be assigned to individual students depending on interests and qualifications.

NSS graduate assistant responsibilities include:

  • Selection for new orientation advisors
  • Assist with pre-semester orientations
  • Assist with the facilitation of a three-credit orientation advisor class
  • Co-edit NSS publications and materials
  • Facilitate programs for parents of new students
  • Facilitate various retreats and workshops for orientation advisors
  • General office duties such as phones and reception of guests
  • More experienced graduate students may be asked to supervise committees or orientation advisor staff during the spring and summer months

Safety Education Program Description

Assist with the development and implementation of Safety Education Program and resources for registered student organization members, leaders and advisors; and assist with special projects and administrative tasks for the Student Activities area of the Office of the Dean of Students.

PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS

  • Interest and knowledge about safety and risks with student organizations;
  • Ability to utilize concepts of student development in program planning, counseling and administrative duties;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proven organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills;
  • A desire to work with college students and a commitment to diversity and social justice issues;
  • Enrollment in the Higher Education Administration program; and
  • Other experience/skills as relevant to specific position responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the development of program safety initiatives and formulating appropriate policies and procedures;
  • Provide presentations, resources and advice to students, advisors and other constituents about risk and safety issues associated with registered student organizations;
  • Develop strategies to promote program safety education services and resources;
  • Prepare internal and external reports and other written correspondence;
  • Participate in staff meetings, strategic planning sessions and committees;
  • Assist in creating learning outcomes and compiling the annual report;
  • Organize and plan events involving students, staff, faculty and administration;
  • Assist with training of peer educators and co-advising the Student Organization Safety Board;
  • Design evaluation tools and assist in conducting assessments on program safety programs and initiatives; and
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

DOS Outreach Assistant Program Position Description

Assist with the management of the Student Organization Center (SOC), a high volume student services office serving registered student organizations, specifically working with the DoS Outreach Assistant Program. Extensive in person, electronic mail and telephone contact with students, faculty, staff, businesses and alumni. Assist with the administration of services and resources for registered student organization members, leaders and advisors. Assist with special projects and administrative tasks for the Student Activities area of the Office of the Dean of Students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates the DoS Outreach Assistant Program including recruiting, selecting, training and evaluating the DoS Outreach Assistants;
  • Assists with the management of the operations of the Student Organization Center (SOC) including leasing space, phone service, mailboxes and the art center;
  • Provides assistance and information for walk-in, telephone and Web communications to UT Austin students, parents, faculty and staff;
  • Assists with registered student organization registration, approval of banners, tables, a-frames, equipment rentals, keys, etc;
  • Assists with the management of support services for the Student Services Building staff;
  • Clarifies institutional rules and consults with registered student organizations;
  • Assists with the coordination and review of the new organization application process;
  • Conducts weekly SOC deposit audits;
  • Assists with the new organization and new officer orientation;
  • Assists with office-wide functions including rally duty and response team; and
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Recognition and Awards Program Position Description

Assist with the development and implementation of the registered student organization recognition and awards program and assist with special projects and administrative tasks for the Student Activities area of the Office of the Dean of Students.

  • Assist with Evening of the Stars;

  • Participate in staff meetings, strategic planning sessions and committees;
  • Organize and plan events involving students, staff, faculty and administration;
  • Serve as a member of the Rally Duty team and response team;
  • Assist in creating learning outcomes and compiling the annual report;
  • Design evaluation tools and assist in conducting assessments on program safety programs and initiatives;
  • Participate in special, complex events for registered student organizations on behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students; and
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Student Judicial Services (SJS)

Two positions are currently available.

Student Judicial Services (SJS) promotes academic integrity and other appropriate standards of conduct for students and the university community. SJS also interprets university policies and implements the student discipline process, which includes investigating alleged student misconduct and resolving student disciplinary matters.

SJS General GA Description

SJS graduate assistant responsibilities may include:

  • Meeting with students referred to SJS
  • Investigating alleged student misconduct and resolving student disciplinary matters
  • Referring students to other departments/programs for assistance and/or fulfillment of sanctions
  • Monitoring compliance with penalty terms
  • Maintaining records and database
  • Assisting with general office duties as needed
  • Assisting with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Preference given to students enrolled in Master's and Ph.D. programs in the College of Education, Higher Education Administration, or in the School of Law.

Student Conduct Board Position Description

Provide administrative and professional support to Student Judicial Services in the development, selection, and training of a student conduct peer review board.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the creation of a student conduct board.
  • Assist with the publicity, recruitment, and selection for the student conduct board.
  • Provide support in developing a training curriculum for the board, as well as assist in the training of the board.
  • Provide administrative support to SJS and the student conduct board in the scheduling of hearings.
  • Assist with assessment activities of the unit as they pertain to the student conduct board.
  • Perform other administrative duties, as assigned.

Student Veteran Services (SVS)

One position is currently available.

Graduate Assistant, Student Veteran Services

DESCRIPTION

Provide administrative and professional support to the Coordinator of Student Veteran Services, including management and support for projects and issues related to student veterans for the University of Texas at Austin. In addition this position will also assist the Associate Dean of Research Initiatives in programs and research projects as it relates to student veterans.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a currently enrolled graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin taking at least 9 hours each long semester.

PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS

  • Experience in conducting research
  • Interest in working with student veterans, families and active military
  • Ability to utilize concepts of student development in program planning, counseling, and administrative duties.
