On October 9, 2007 the University of Texas at Austin community honored the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez by unveiling a statue in his honor in the West Mall area, which is a gateway to the University and serves as a gathering space for students and other members of our community.
Cesar Chavez was a civil rights and labor leader whose work as a spiritual figure reflected his commitment to social change. As a place that continues to be associated with student activism, the West Mall best exemplifies the ideals and beliefs that Cesar Chavez held in high regard, and his symbolic sculpture in this location will serve as a reminder of the power of one person's voice.
