A Tribute to Barbara Jordan
The University of Texas at Austin Barbara Jordan Statue Project Committee and The University of Texas System Board of Regents invite three-dimensional visual artists to apply for consideration in the development of a commemorative outdoor bronze statue in honor of the late Barbara Jordan. The University of Texas at Austin's student body and the Board of Regents have authorized a total of $444,864 toward the entire project including, but not limited to the construction of the sculpture, other related project costs, and an endowed scholarship in Ms. Jordan's name.
In 1966, Barbara Jordan did the impossible: she was elected as the first African-American woman from the South to serve in the U.S. Congress. Her career spanned four decades, and her passion for her country's ideals and her rousing oratory style brought her success as a politician, a champion of civil rights, and a professor at The University of Texas at Austin. Ms. Jordan's tireless efforts for her nation and her fellow citizens made her a national treasure. Barbara Jordan remains an example of how one person's commitment to her beliefs can inspire and shape the world.
